Secondary school student councils recognized for their achievements

Hermiston High School, Armand Larive and Sandstone Middle School student councils were recognized on April 29, at the Oregon Association of Student Councils (OASC) spring conference. Hermiston School District is the only district in the state with each secondary schools receiving an award.

Student councils from Hermiston High School and Armand Larive Middle School were presented with a Gold Council for Outstanding Achievement award. Hermiston High School was one of eleven high schools to receive this recognition, and Armand Larive was one of ten other schools to have a high achieving student council. Sandstone Middle School received the Silver Council award. Each school also received a coupon for $50 off a conference registration; so, one student is able to attend the summer leadership camp.

The award was given by the Oregon Association of Student Councils and is awarded when student councils meet standards—related to community service, creating events that promote school spirit and pride, sportsmanship, unity, recognition and leadership training. The goals to meet these standards are usually set in the fall.

“Student leaders have the opportunity to make a tremendous impact on the culture and climate of their school and the academic success of their student body by the activities they sponsor,” states Sara Nilles, Executive Director for the Association. OASC serves middle and high school student councils around the state and is a department within COSA (Confederations of Oregon School Administrators).
